Behind the music

The story so far.

Becket is the stage name of Alston Cyrus, a calypsonian and composer born in St. Vincent. The Caymanian Times says he first played steel pan, chose to pursue singing while serving in the U.S. Army, and performed on a soldiers' tour in Hawaii from 1972 to 1974 before turning professional in 1975. That year "Carnival History" made him Calypso King of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. His hits include "Coming High" from 1977, "Wine Down Kingstown" from 1978 and "Teaser" from 1990, whose Spanish version "Ella Me Vacila" earned a BMI Latin Award in 1994. He received Record of the Year and Best Party Tune at the first Caribbean Music Awards in New York in 1991. Searchlight reported in October 2022 that the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus made him an honorary Doctor of Letters, and that Layou welcomed him home as its hometown hero. "Love Is The Answer" is a good entry point.
