Behind the music
Lady Leen is Frances Marileen Baptiste, a calypsonian born in Castries, Saint Lucia, who grew up in the CDC apartments and attended Gordon and Walcott Memorial Methodist School and St. Joseph's Convent. Her first competition song, Respect, took her to third place in the 1990 Calypso Monarch final, which The Voice describes as the first time a woman reached that final round. That year she also placed sixth at a Queen of the World calypso contest in Dominica. Her catalog includes Woman In A March, written by Face Calixte, and Jam Time by Bernard Fanis, which placed third in the 1999 soca monarch. She released the Christmas album Xmas Ecstasy in 1997 and finished fourth in that year's calypso final. Honours include the Saint Lucia Les Pitons Medal in 2005 and a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. She was back in the 2018 Calypso Monarch final with Make My Day and Generation Y, and Calabash TV has marked her 30 years in calypso.
