Behind the music

The story so far.

King Obstinate is a calypsonian with recordings that stretch across several decades. An upload of his song "Wet Your Hands" dates it to 1958, alongside a later performance of it from 2004. A full album of his work circulates on YouTube under the title In a Calypso Groove. His best known songs, now on a YouTube topic channel, include "Shiney Eyes", "Who Kill My Sister", "Land of Democracy", "Children Melee" and "Hungry". He also sang "Short Shirt's Wedding", a nod to his fellow calypsonian King Short Shirt, and "Farewell Papa Bird". His Deezer catalog on Green Bay Records shows a later turn toward gospel, with A Christmas Blessing in 1999 and The Anointed in 2000, followed by two Greatest Hits volumes in 2005. A DJ mix billed as his soca classics has also drawn a large audience.
