Behind the music

The story so far.

Orchestre Tropicana d'Haïti is a big band from Cap-Haïtien, the northern city Haitians call Okap. The Haitian Times traces it to the Caribbean Orchestra, which became the Tropicana Orchestra of Haiti in 1963 during the first, orchestra-led phase of konpa dirèk, and later names it among the influential bands of the genre's golden age. Potomitan describes Tropicana as the second oldest band of its kind in Haiti, after Septentrional, with both still based in Cap-Haïtien. The paper's look at regional scenes credits the two northern orchestras with making the north part of konpa's fabric, ready to take up the new beat alongside Nemours Jean-Baptiste, and a 2025 Haitian Times report lists Tropicana among the groups that have built large international followings. The band's official YouTube channel posts live footage such as Déclaration, filmed at Plaine du Nord on July 24, 2023, and fans keep sharing Randevou Chanpet and Pran Konsiyans.
