5Star Akil is the stage name of Akil Anthony Borneo, a singer, songwriter and DJ who was born and raised in St James, Trinidad and Tobago. Before his own records, he formed the Associate Degree Sound System, a DJ crew started with friends during his time at the radio station 96.1 WE FM. His first major soca single was Partier, produced by Sheriff and Samuel Jack. He followed it with To Meh Heart, a 2014 release produced by Precision Productions, and Island Adventure for the 2015 season. His 2016 song Different Me carried Desperadoes Steel Orchestra to its 11th National Panorama title that year, ending a 16 year wait for the band. In 2017 he released HERO, his debut mixtape. Later releases on his official channel include Personal on the Osaka Riddim. In 2022 he was baptised at the St. James Pentecostal Church and stepped away from the soca stage, and he now runs a frozen treats company called Island Treats.
