Behind the music

The story so far.

Ataklan is the stage name of Mark Antonio Jiminez, a singer, songwriter and label founder from Chinapoo, Morvant, in Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago. His work sits mainly in the modern rapso tradition while crossing into soca. Early albums include Atanomical, made with Machel Montano in 1998, and Atamorphosis on TAJ Records in 1999, and he toured the United States with the band Xtatik. His song Smile with Terri Lyons was nominated for Best Soca Collaboration at the 2010 International Soca Awards. For Carnival 2015 he released Riddim Inna Meh and joined Bunji Garlin on Renegade Soca. That same year he played SXSW in Austin with EchoSlim, headlined Jazz on the Esplanade at the Tobago Jazz Experience and appeared at Glastonbury with Jus Now and Bunji Garlin. Other songs credited to him include Flambo, Soca Girl and Caribbean Swagga. His later album One Morvant Night was partly recorded in Jamaica with producer Mikie Bennett.
