Behind the music

The story so far.

Zin is a compas band from Brooklyn, led by maestro Alex Abellard, that The Haitian Times credits with helping found the New Generation Konpa movement at the end of the 1980s. Abellard recruited singer Alan Cavé after hearing him on a demo tape, and the band made a big splash with Fèm Vole in 1988, followed by the hit Opa. Singers Marie Georges "Princesse Georgy" Métellus and Magguy Foreste gave the group a rare female presence on the bandstand, and their Jeudi Saint, Jeudi Zin Thursday bals packed dance floors in New York and Miami. The paper notes that Zin was not just riding the nouvelle génération wave but shaping it, and that its 1990s rivalry with Phantoms became one of the era's defining beefs. Deezer carries O Pa, M'Kanpe Sou Yon Bit Konpa, with Alan Cavé's ballad All I Want, and Sa Zin Gen La A? I Don't Know.
