Bossa Combo
Carrefour, Haiti
Dada Jackaman's 1965 mini-jazz band that seeded Skah Shah.
Behind the music
Shleu Shleu is a konpa group founded in 1965 by Hugues "Dada" Jackaman, according to Le Nouvelliste, which says the band found rapid success before internal conflicts weakened it. The Haitian Times places it in the mini-jazz wave alongside Les Fantaisistes de Carrefour, Les Gypsies de Pétion-Ville and Scorpio Universel, and ties it to the Bas Peu de Chose neighborhood of the Port-au-Prince area, where rival bands competed neighborhood against neighborhood. Members who moved to New York in 1973 went on to form Skah Shah. Singer Jean-Michel St-Victor came to the band from Les Frénétiques, and it was Jackaman who started calling him Zouzoul, the name he kept for life. Fan uploads credit a singer listed as T. Moïse on songs such as Consonmin Kompa and 7 Jours de la Semaine, and its Topic channel carries Moun Damou, Solange and Compas X. Old-school fans still name the band among konpa's classic outfits.
