Orchestre Septentrional
Cap-Haïtien, Haiti
Teenage Waney band of 1968 that grew into a compas big band.
Behind the music
Bossa Combo is a compas band founded on August 14, 1968, in Waney, in the Carrefour area, according to Le Nouvelliste. The group first called itself Rex Stars before taking a name inspired by Brazilian bossa nova and by the small ensembles known as combos, and its first lineup drew teenagers from Waney, Fontamara and Carrefour-Feuilles. By the paper's account the band stayed active for about thirty years before it faded, with more than twenty albums to its name and singer Raymond Cajuste as its enduring legacy. The Haitian Times groups it with Skah Shah and Tabou Combo among the young mini-jazz bands that brought rock, pop and Latin touches into konpa, and fans it surveyed still cite Chère Madame and Pèmanant, pèmanant dola among their favorite konpa hits. The band's Topic channel on YouTube carries Accolade, Religions, Permanente and Bravo Compas, and a 1974 recording of Te Quiero circulates online.
