Behind the music
Sheldon Blackman is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Trinidad and Tobago and a son of Ras Shorty I, the man credited with creating soca and its gospel offshoot jamoo. Caribbean Beat's profile of the Blackman family says he was born in 1978. When his father died in 2000, he took over leadership of The Love Circle, the family band. With the Love Circle he released Remember Me in 2000 on the family's Jamoo Good News label, followed by Remember Me Reloaded in 2004 on Electro Sounds. His solo catalogue also includes One Big Fat Love Bomb, Overflowing and Hope. Overflowing came out in 2010 on Parlophone Norway, with "Revolution Time" and "People Of The Islands". He has since been living in Norway, fronting The Soul Rebels, a band of musicians from several countries that has played Oslo, Stavanger and Steinkjer, and he still plays concerts at home. His project page describes his sound as calypso, soca, reggae, rapso and jamoo mixed with jazz and blues. Recent singles include "Grow Your Food" (2019) and "Oh Venezuela" (2020).
