Behind the music
Lord Canary was the stage name of Malcolm Corrica, a Guyanese calypsonian and politician. Guyana Times, citing a government release, reported that he was born on March 21, 1937, on the East Bank Demerara, sat in Parliament for the People's National Congress and served as Minister of State for Culture, among other posts. He received the Medal of Service in 1992 for his work in politics, music and entertainment. News Source Guyana called him a former Calypso Monarch of Guyana who was last crowned in 2006 and listed "Cockle", "Dr. Beckles", "Wicket Cricket" and "Tribute to Woman" among his best known pieces. The same report said a biography by Allan Fenty was launched in 2016 and recalled an interview in which he called calypso his first true love. He died on October 10, 2016, aged 79. His granddaughter Faith Corrica, who performs as Lil Canary, has said she aims to pass his record of six calypso titles.
