Behind the music
KI, born Kris Persad, is a three-time Chutney Soca Monarch and the frontman of KI and The Band. He became the youngest winner of the title in 2012 with Single Forever, won again in 2014 with Runaway and took a third crown in 2016 with Same Gyal Twice. In October 2012 he opened Single 4Eva on piano and performed it with Machel Montano at the 103FM Awards at Queen's Hall. His 2020 song One Thing, which he wrote and produced himself, was filmed on the streets of Toronto and drew more than 300,000 YouTube views in its first month. The band traces back to 1977, when his uncles Narin and Sharma Ramdular formed 3Veni with Narsaloo Ramaya. His father Veerendra Persad took over in 1993 and partnered with JMC Records, and the group later became JMC 3Veni and then KI and The Band. Its manager has called 3Veni the first chutney band to cross into hard core soca.
