Calypso / Soca • St Andrew, Grenada
Veteran Grenadian calypsonian with five decades of songwriting.
Behind the music
Elwyn "Black Wizard" McQuilkin is a veteran Grenadian calypsonian whose roots are in La Digue, a village in St Andrew. At the 2019 Champs in Concert show he was billed as a three-time Grenada calypso monarch and received a plaque marking 50 years as a calypsonian, from 1969 to 2019. The Legends in Concert awards named him Best Writer in 2018, the same year he returned to the Dimanche Gras stage after a long absence. In 2022 he released "A Tribute to Louise Langdon Little", honouring the La Digue born mother of Malcolm X, and said it would be his last vocal contribution to calypso, though he would keep writing songs for other calypsonians. NOW Grenada lists his classics as including "The IMF", "Pan Man", "Soca Feelings", "New World Order", "When the Carnival Over" and "Oh Grenada". Archive footage from GBTV CultureShare shows him performing "Soca feeling" in 1988, "When the carnival over" in 1991 and "Soca Instructor" in 1994.
