Behind the music

The story so far.

Red Plastic Bag is the stage name of Stedson Wiltshire, a Barbadian calypsonian whom the Nation describes as St Philip-born. The paper traces his start to the St Philip Calypso Competition, which he entered in 1979 and won three years running, and to his first national title at Pic-O-De-Crop in 1982 with Mr Harding and Sugar Made Us Free, when he became the youngest calypsonian to take that crown. By August 2012 the Nation counted ten national calypso titles and described his lyrics as self-penned. A 2018 report adds Sweet Soca wins with Once Upon A Wine in 2011 and Boat Ride in 2017, his 2014 decision to stop entering Pic-O-De-Crop and his naming as a Cultural Ambassador in 2017. Totally Barbados singles out Ragga Ragga among his hits, and provider credits list Wiltshire as its songwriter and lead vocalist.
