Behind the music
Alison Hinds is a Barbadian soca singer who first came to national prominence with Square One in the late 1980s. Born in England and raised in Barbados, she became a leading voice in a band scene often dominated by men. Barbados’s tourism authority traces that rise through songs such as Ragamuffin and Bazodee and her Party Monarch and Road March successes in 1997. Faluma became another important Square One recording, with lyrics in the language of Suriname’s Saamaka community. Her solo repertoire includes Roll It Gal, which she has described as a song of encouragement and female empowerment. The two listening selections below introduce those different parts of her career through specific editions. Her tourism profile also discusses working with younger writers and producers as her music developed. These accounts connect her band history, solo work and continuing interest in Caribbean culture without reducing her career to one performance style or one Carnival season.
