Black Roots
Dominica
Cadence-lypso band behind Kaméla and Aïe manman.
Behind the music
Black Affairs is a cadence-lypso band from the era when Exile One led the style. Wikipedia's account of the music of Dominica lists it next to names such as the Grammacks, Black Roots, Belles Combo and Midnight Groovers. Archive uploads of the band's songs Simon and La Vie Musique credit Ferdinand Prince on lead vocals and Redley Prince on keyboards, and a separate interview video introduces Joe Boland as the band's guitarist. Two of its songs, Kaméla and Ca moin di ou Fé, also known as Aïe manman, are available as official clips on the Futurcrew channel. A track titled Kadance lypso spells out the style by name. On Deezer, the band's catalogue includes the album Lespwa, dated 2011, and Memories, a 2025 reissue of its original vinyl recordings, which makes the older material easy to stream.
