Behind the music

The story so far.

Problem Child is Shertz James, the Vincentian artist whose music combines soca with dancehall influences. In a 2005 Searchlight interview, he recalled receiving his stage name at Grammar School, where he was known for joking with classmates. That early interview described his enthusiasm for soca, admiration for confident performers and interest in the way dancehall writers put words together. More than two decades later, he told Searchlight that making music people enjoy mattered more to him than pursuing records or accumulating titles. Those July 2026 comments accompanied reporting on his Road March success with Party Time. Nasty Up and Never Bow (Neither Me) provide two listening starting points below, each tied to its named edition. The Nasty Up song guide separately examines his account of staging the song for the 2020 International Soca Monarch semifinal. His biography and the recording guides work together to distinguish the person, his songwriting and particular performances.
