Behind the music

The story so far.

Lord Kitchener was the performing name of Aldwyn Roberts, the calypsonian from Arima, Trinidad. Trafford’s heritage archive documents his arrival in Britain on the Empire Windrush in 1948 and the newsreel performance of London Is the Place for Me that introduced him to British audiences. His recording work there included the Parlophone, Melodisc and Lyragon labels. Songs such as My Landlady and The Cold in Winter addressed aspects of Caribbean life in Britain, while The Manchester Football Double reflected his connection to Manchester. He returned to Trinidad in 1962. The selected remastered listings of London Is the Place for Me and My Landlady offer two ways into that repertoire. They are later provider editions, distinct from the filmed Windrush performance. The wider catalog preserves album and compilation dates separately from the earlier periods described in their titles.
