Antigua and Barbuda
Antiguan calypso great knighted as Sir McLean Emanuel.
Behind the music
King Short Shirt is the stage name of McLean Emanuel, a calypsonian born in St John's, Antigua, in 1942. He entered his first calypso contest in 1962, finished second runner-up the next year and won the Antigua Calypso Monarch in 1964, going on to collect fifteen local crowns and seven regional ones before his last competition in 1992. His Road March wins include "Tourist Leggo" from 1976, a song that also placed second in Trinidad's Road March that year. "Lamentation" from 1973 is one of his best known social commentaries, and "Nobody Go Run Me", "Vivian Richards" and "Our Pledge" are widely shared recordings. His albums run from Spiced and Styled in 1973 through Wadadlie Rock, Press On and Summer Festival to The Message in 2001. Wikipedia dates his knighthood to 2002, and the Trinidad Guardian was billing him as Sir McLean Emanuel by 2014. He turned to Christianity in 1997 and has mostly recorded gospel since then.
