Behind the music
Jocelyne Béroard is a singer and writer from Martinique whose voice is central to the story of Kassav’ and to zouk more broadly. Her career connects group performance with a substantial solo repertoire, including the albums Siwo, Milans and Madousinay. Before becoming a lead voice in Kassav’, she worked as a backing singer, developing the musical relationships that shaped her later work. Siwo and Kolé Séré provide two starting points for discovering the clarity and warmth of her delivery. Her artistic life extends into acting and writing, including the autobiography Loin de l'amer. Across these forms, her work gives space to Creole language and Caribbean experience, making her an important connection between the music's collective history and its individual storytellers.
