Start listeningBehind the music
Destra Garcia is a soca singer from Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago. In Nigel Campbell’s 2019 interview, she traces an early turning point to teacher Janice Roach, who wrote her first school calypso and prepared her to perform it. She later wrote her own calypsos in secondary school. Garcia describes a household shaped by soul, reggae, older calypso, jazz and steelpan. Her professional path included R&B experiments, a collaboration with Third Bass on Just A Friend, and frontline roles with Roy Cape All Stars and Atlantik. That history gives context to the performer also associated with the Queen of Bacchanal and Lucy identities. Lucy and Rum and Soca are two specific recordings to explore below. The listening links identify individual tracks credited to Destra, rather than a similarly named artist or an entire playlist. Check each edition’s details when comparing another upload, remix or compilation appearance; a matching title alone does not establish the same recording.
