Behind the music

The story so far.

David Michael Rudder grew up in Belmont, Trinidad, and sang pop and rhythm and blues with the Solutions as a child. UWI’s honorary degree citation recounts his move to Charlie’s Roots in 1977, initially as a temporary replacement for Christopher “Tambu” Herbert. The university identifies 1986 as a major year in his career, with Young King, National Calypso Monarch and Road March titles. Trinidad All Stars also won Panorama with Leon Edwards’ arrangement of Rudder’s The Hammer; that steelband result is separate from Rudder’s individual titles. The Hammer and Calypso Music provide the two selected listening entries. Both appear in the provider’s Gilded Collection edition, whose date belongs to the compilation rather than to every song it gathers. The wider catalog includes concert recordings and later albums, retaining their titles, track sequences and edition-specific credits.
