Behind the recording

Celebrating CARICOM — Michele Henderson’s song, production and launch

“Celebrating CARICOM” is Michele Henderson’s composition selected as the Caribbean Community’s official patriotic song. CARICOM documents its intended ceremonial use, the production team and a launch performance with specially prepared accompaniment.

A song for Community occasions

CARICOM says the song is primarily for ceremonial and Community events. Its competition began during the organization’s fortieth-anniversary celebrations in 2013; a regional judging panel selected Henderson’s composition.

The institution identifies Kwéyòl from the Lesser Antilles and Suriname’s Sranan Tongo in the bridge. Those language references are useful for understanding the regional scope of the commission without republishing its lyrics or score.

What happened at the July 2014 launch?

The July 1, 2014 launch report places Henderson at the opening ceremony of the thirty-fifth CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Antigua and Barbuda. Dancers from the National Dance Theatre of Antigua and Barbuda supported the performance.

CARICOM describes a regional backing soundtrack prepared specifically for that event and reports that the song had also been recorded on CD. The event performance, the reported CD and the current official listening collection are separate pieces of evidence; the sources do not provide identifiers proving that their audio masters are identical.
