Behind the recording

Tatoom — Andy Narell: title, pan recording method and named guests

Andy Narell says the name “Tatoom” comes from its first two bass notes. His interview also explains the album’s layered steelpan recording method, while the selected track listing specifically names Luis Conte and Mark Walker.

The title comes from the opening bass notes

In his When Steel Talks interview, Andy Narell explains that “Tatoom” represents the sound of the opening two bass notes. The title therefore points to a detail he identifies in the composition, rather than to an inferred place, character or genre.

The interview also explains how the album’s steelpan parts were built: Narell played the pans himself, recording one instrument at a time. His account describes the method used for the album; it does not document a live orchestra performing this particular track in one session.

Track names and album personnel have different scopes

The selected Apple Music track is titled “Tatoom (feat. Luis Conte & Mark Walker).” Its contributor page names Narell as performer and songwriter. In the interview, Narell identifies Conte with congas and percussion and Walker as one of the album’s drummers.

The interview also names Jean Philippe Fanfant, Mike Stern and David Sanchez in the wider album personnel. Their presence on the album does not place them on the title track. Keeping the track’s named guests separate avoids turning an album roster into unsupported individual credits.
