Behind the music

The story so far.

Johnny King is a calypsonian who burst onto the scene in 1984. An Apple Music biography describes him as a policeman who released a 12-inch single or EP each year, pairing meaningful lyrics with an uptempo dance groove. In some years, such as 1985, it was the message song that caught on, while in others he had serious Road March contenders, and 1988 brought perhaps his biggest party moment with "Wet Me Down". Caribbean Beat reviewed his compilation "The Best of Johnny King" on King Charles Productions in 1997, praising his unpretentious, down-home voice and naming "Wet Me Down" and "Nature's Plan" among the hits. Later he was among the veteran pioneers, with Baron and Ronnie McIntosh, who returned to the International Soca Monarch stage, and he appeared as a guest at Baron's 40th anniversary concert.
