Carnival’s absence became the story
In Newsday’s January 24, 2023 interview, Jeffers described personifying the absence of Carnival as a story of longing. Producer Kyle Phillips said the work developed across pandemic studio sessions alongside “The Return” and “The Ambush.”
Jeffers distinguished the songs’ emotional purposes: “Come Home” made the plea for Carnival’s return. This explains the writer’s intended story without treating its narrator as a literal account of either performer’s relationship.
