What is the taxation argument in the song?
Gordon Rohlehr reads the song as a reversal: its narrator begins with a threatening attitude toward the new politicians, then backs away from violence. In this interpretation, Sparrow turns public anger about taxation toward acceptance of paying taxes.
Rohlehr discusses it alongside “PAYE” and “You Can’t Get Away from the Tax.” That comparison concerns a sequence of political songs; it is not evidence that the events spoken by the narrator happened to Sparrow himself.

When did PAYE begin?
Trinidad and Tobago’s Inland Revenue Division dates the introduction of PAYE to 1958. This is the tax-withholding system’s start, not the first year of income taxation. The booklet’s 1957 song header and that 1958 policy date therefore identify different things.
